Barmitzvah

It literally translates to "son of commandment" and implies "responsible male."According to Jewish Law, every Jewish boy becomes a bar mitzvah at age 13. As a bar mitzvah, he becomes obligated by God's commandments - as prescribed in the Torah and as interpreted by Moses, the Prophets, the Sages and the Rabbis. The bar mitzvah boy also becomes eligible to count in a prayer quorum (minyan), lead prayer services, testify before a religious court...

Pertaining to Marathi or Tamil customs it is synonymous with "Munja" or "poonal" respectively.
So coming back to my curiously titled blog. Of course, yours truly was working at this opulent Jewish shift at the ballroom and enjoyed herself thoroughly.There were about a thousand guests out of which 400 were kids.The entire ceremony was strictly kosher.The barmitzvah boy was attired in Armani and also got himself a neat little MiniCooper with a chauffeur as one of his gifts (sigh!).

There was one Food and Beverage Attendant assigned to each of the 40 tables.The foyer had a twelve foot ice sculpture shaped like a mountain .From it rivers of 7 different types of Mexican tequila flowed to be collected neatly at the bottom ,stacked with baccarat crystal shot glasses. There was an impressive array of cold cuts,pastrami,kosher salami and corned beef. The evening started with canapes and champagne.It was followed by a three course traditional meal replete with white and red kosher wines (I know,I was surprised too,kosher wines?!!).

The desserts were the best part of the evening with every child enjoying a huge martini glass of Strawberry Romanov (strawberries,whipped cram,ice cream!) apart from a selection of chocofudge ,brownie sundaes and the like.The adults were more of the sorbet-souffle kind and preferred the liqueurs and sweet dessert wines.Then came the humongous platters of date and honey cake,exotic fruits and seven types of cheeses accompanied with crackers.There were trays of coffee and Kahlua,baileys and espresso shots.

A comedian,a great band,music, strobe lights and a lot of dancing followed.There were speeches by the Rabbis who also monitored the entire evening,right from the way the food was prepared and served to the other customary aspects of the barmitzvah.It was a million $AUD event.Oh and did I mention I got to try All of the canapes,dessert,some quality Riesling and Lindeman's ,whichever took my fancy..:P
